Every Baby Matters

 A better start for babies

We are working with our partners on key thing that will give babies in the district a better start in life.

Our priorities are:

Priorities

What we have done

1. Reduce the infant mortality rate in the district (the number of babies who supported the research of Born in Bradford die before they are one year old). Increase understanding of genetically inherited congenital anomalies as a cause of death.

We support the research of the Born in Bradford project through inviting researchers to speak to families accessing our Children's Centre services.

We increase the understanding of genetically inherited congenital anomalies as a cause of death in discussion groups such as Time out.

2. Improve the health and nutrition of pregnant women and mothers. Provide nutrition information through baby weaning sessions, and cook & eat and breastfeeding support.

We provide nutrition information through breastfeeding support, baby weaning sessions and cook & eat courses. We have an onsite health trainer to support families with individual health issues.

3. Reduce child poverty. Support families to access appropriate services.

We provide access to our centre Job Centre Plus advisor, job vacancies displayed and access to IT equipment to search for vacancies.

We provide access to a community and debt advisor who can provide support around benefit entitlement, debt issues and information about grants, accessing low cost household items.

4. Provide accessible maternity services, infant care and other support for women and families

We signpost families to relevant agencies for maternity support. We can provide family support to families caring for children birth to five years.

5. Actively promote Healthy Start vitamins and breastfeeding

We signpost parents to local GP services to access Healthy Start Vitamins. We have trained Family Support Workers.

6. Reduce smoking, alcohol and drug misuse within the family

We provide information to parents and carers around these issues. Sign post to specialist agencies.

7. Increase the understanding in communities of how genes influence a baby's health.

We have trained staff who are able to discuss genetic anomalies and signpost to specialist services.

The Bradford District Partnership is organising Every baby Matters Awareness Week from 4-8 April to give us ideas on how to improve the health of your baby and your family.
